Can I make a confession? I absolutely love being organized, but to be honest, I'm kind of a messy person.
I'll go through phases where I get really organized, then things get kind of crazy, then I get my act together again, etc. Let's just say that it's a work in progress!
My desk is one area that really needs attention. It's tiny, so the least bit of paperwork completely clutters it up. This DIY Memo Board was the perfect organizing solution!
DIY Memo Board
With back to school season in full swing, it's seems like the perfect time to share this fabric Memo Board.
I use my custom Memo Board by my desk, but this DIY organization project really has so many uses. Try it in the kitchen, office, dorm room, or as part of a command center ... it truly makes getting organized fun.
This cute cork board is perfect for holding odds and ends, like business cards, gift cards, tickets, and notes that would otherwise get lost. Please tell me I'm not the only one who hoards these things!
My favorite thing about this DIY Custom Memo Board is that it's so easy to personalize to your exact taste, and you don't need a lot of supplies either.
Pick your favorite fabric, paint the squares in different patterns and colors, and more.
You can find cork tiles in many sizes and shapes, too. So although my cork board is on the small size, the sky is really the limit here.
How to Make Your Own Memo Board
Want to make your own DIY Memo Board? Here's what you'll need:
- cork tiles (I used 6-inch tiles, but 12-inch tiles would work great, too.)
- fabric
- hot glue gun
- painters tape
- craft paint
- foam brush
- adhesive mounting squares
Start by cutting out your fabric. Use a tile as a guide and leave a wide enough border to wrap the fabric around the back of the tile (about an inch).
Attaching Fabric to Tiles
Using the glue gun, run a line of glue along one end of the tile. Then, carefully press the fabric over the glue.
Repeat on the opposite side of the tile, pulling the fabric taut so it lies flat.
This was one of the last projects I made with my old glue gun. Look at that thing ... ha ha! It lasted 20+ years and went through a lot with me (countless burned fingers), but my new glue gun is a definite upgrade!
Fold in the corners neatly (kind of like wrapping a present), then attach them with glue as well.
Repeat on the opposite side, pulling the fabric tight so it lies flat on the front of the tile.
And you're done ... wasn't that easy?
Painting the Tiles
For the painted squares, start by taping a border around the outside edge of the tiles about ½-inch wide.
About ½-inch from this border, add another row of tape on the inside of the tile.
When you are finished, you should have a two separate layers of tape with a plain cork border in between.
Use the foam brush to paint the exposed tile with craft paint. Add additional coats of paint for more coverage, if needed.
Carefully remove the painters tape (before the paint dries) to reveal the border.
Repeat with any remaining tiles.
Hanging the Memo Board
I used mounting squares to hang my DIY Memo Board. Make sure to use removeable mounting squares, otherwise they'll be hard to get off later.
Simply add the mounting square to the back of the tiles (following the package directions) and hang up your cork board.
Wasn't that easy?
I love how this DIY Custom Memo Board turned out. It makes a fun addition to my desk space, plus it helps me keep those odd bits organized.
Have fun personalizing this Custom Memo Board to fit your space!
And let me know if you try this easy DIY organization project ... I'd love to see how it turns out.
