Beauty on a Dime: My Favorite Drugstore Products

I love obscure, fancy, and/or expensive beauty products as much as the next girl, but it’s hard to beat the high of discovering a hidden steal at the drugstore. As much as I love Benefit, et. al., it’s fun to mix high and low products – why spend money on something expensive when there is a more budget-friendly option?

Here’s a roundup of my favorite drugstore beauty products:

Beauty on a Dime: My Favorite Drugstore ProductsTools:

1.  This e.l.f. Cosmetics Eyebrow Comb + Brush is one of my makeup essentials.
2.  Brushes are something you’ll use everyday, but they can be expensive. EcoTools brushes are great quality, and this Bamboo Handle 4-Piece Brush Set is a great starter kit.
3.  I will admit that I’m too lazy to curl my lashes everyday, but when I do, my trusty Revlon Lash Curler does the job perfectly.

4.  I’m constantly trying new foundations, trying to find “the one.” Revlon ColorStay Makeup for Combination/Oily Skin (I use Ivory) has found a permanent place in the rotation.
5.  I’ve mentioned my affection for Maybelline Dream Lumi Touch Highlighting Concealer (my color is Ivory) before. Use it under your eyes and to highlight your cheekbones.
6.  For concealer with heavier coverage, I use Maybelline Cover Stick Concealer (I like Light Beige for my skin tone). It’s perfect for covering those pesky spots.
7.  Maybelline Mineral Power Finishing Veil Translucent Powder will set your makeup perfectly – I love the velvety finish.
8.  I carry Maybelline Shine Free Oil Control Pressed Powder (in Ivory) with me for mid-day touch ups. Gotta keep my oily skin in control, and this does the trick.

Eyes & Lips:
9.  I always do my eyebrows, even on minimal makeup days. My go to eyebrow pencil is Maybelline Expert Wear Twin Brow and Eye Pencil in Light Brown.
10.  I’ve been using CoverGirl Perfect Point Plus Self Sharpening Eye Pencil for years. It goes and smoothly and smudges easily for a slightly smoky effect. My favorite color for a natural look is Espresso.
11.  Revlon Colorstay 16 Hour Eye Shadow Quad in Moonlit is one of my favorite palettes. I apply the second lightest color all over my lids on lazy days, and if I’m feeling more ambitious, all of the colors can be applied for a more dramatic, but still natural look.
12.  As I’ve mentioned before, my go to mascara is Maybelline Volum’Express One By One Mascara in Blackest Black. You’ll love the clump-free finish.
13.  I discovered Jordana Incolor Squeeze n Shine Super Shiny Tasty Lip Gloss (now that’s a mouthful) when I was searching for my favorite Philosophy Lip Gloss that I can never seem to find in any local stores. It’s super cheap and it’s not too sticky, which is a surprisingly hard quality to find in a lip gloss.

Do you know of any secret drugstore beauty buys? I’d love to know your favorites!

Treat Yourself: Spicy Chocolate “Cookies”

I have a massive sweet tooth. Unfortunately, I can’t be trusted around a lot of sugar, so in an effort to eat somewhat healthy, we don’t keep a ton of sweets around our apartment.  I love it when my husband brings home a treat though!

The other day, he surprised me with a package of Emmy’s Choco Chili Macaroons. I’ll admit that I was a little skeptical at first (raw and vegan do not always equal super yummy), but the macaroons were really delicious, and the ingredients were pretty healthy, too. If you see them anywhere, definitely pick up a package.

Anyway, my mind immediately started spinning, and I set about recreating the macaroons.  Here is my version – I’m calling mine cookies. Give them a try. You’ll love these lightly sweet treats. They make a great, healthy snack (as long as you don’t eat the whole batch in one sitting).

Spicy Chocolate Cookies

Spicy Chocolate CookiesMakes 18

  • 1 cup almond meal
  • 1 cup unsweetened, shredded coconut
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • pinch salt
  • cayenne
  • 1/4 cup coconut oil (melted, if solid)
  • 1/8 cup honey
  • 1/4 tsp. vanilla

Combine almond meal, shredded coconut, cocoa powder, and salt in a small bowl. Add a few dashes of cayenne, to taste (I added 7).  Mix well.

Add the coconut oil, honey, and vanilla. Stir until combined. It will have a slightly crumbly texture, but shouldn’t be totally dry or too soft.

Mixing Spicy Chocolate Cookie IngredientsRefrigerate for 30 minutes.

After 30 minutes, remove the mixture from the refrigerator and form your cookies. Take about a tablespoon of the “dough,” and press it firmly together and gently form it into a small cookie, smoothing out any jagged edges. Repeat with the remaining dough.

Shape Spicy Chocolate Cookie Dough into Cookies

Spicy Chocolate CookiesThat’s it – enjoy! Store the cookies in the refrigerator to keep them nice and firm.

Notes: If your mixture is too dry and won’t hold together even after you refrigerate it, add a little extra coconut oil.

Almond meal is made from almonds that are ground into a fine, floury texture. You can purchase almond meal (or flour) at Trader Joe’s or Whole Foods or the natural foods section of many other grocery stores. If you can’t find it anywhere, make your own by grinding blanched almonds in a food processor until very fine.

The Best Things to Buy at HomeGoods

The Best Things to Buy at HomeGoodsDo you love HomeGoods? Me, too.

What is not to love? It’s almost impossible to walk out of there without finding find something cute and trendy for my apartment. When we moved to New York, we bought a ton of stuff there. From kitchen utensils to furniture, they sell it.

HomeGoods can sometimes be a little hit or miss (hello, giant horse jockey statue, I’m talking about you), but there are a few items that can always be counted on to be in stock:

Best Things to Buy at HomeGoods: FramesI love buying frames from HomeGoods. From traditional to trendy, the perfect picture frame is usually easy to find, and the prices can’t be beat!

Decorative Pillows

Best Things to Buy at HomeGoods: PillowsHomeGoods has aisles of pillows. Some are really tacky! Pick through the schlock though, and you will find some gems. I especially love their ikat print pillows.

If you prefer down-filled pillows, here’s a great tip: visit the clearance section and look for the cheapest down-filled pillows you can find. Don’t worry about the ugly cover – just remove it when you get home. Cover the insert with a new pillow case or sew your own. Voila, luxurious down inserts for cheap!

Garden Stools

Best Things to Buy at HomeGoods: Garden StoolsMy HomeGoods has a great selection of garden stools. I love them, because they are so versatile: they work with all different styles of decor – from traditional to modern; they are the perfect size for an accent table; and they can be used indoors or out.

Best Things to Buy at HomeGoods: LampsLamps are definitely my favorite thing to buy at HomeGoods. From classic to fun (hello, owl lamp!), the perfect lamp is just waiting for you to snap it up!

What is your favorite thing to buy at HomeGoods? Have you ever been charmed by a crazy rooster or oversized horse jockey?

Hello Friday! Link Roundup: Early Fall Favorites

Call me crazy, but I am so ready for fall. It has been such a hot, humid, and genuinely uncomfortable summer. Plus, fall is my favorite season, and I haven’t been able to enjoy it since I moved to San Francisco (there are no real seasons there).

New York City is full of trees, so I think fall here will be pretty amazing. I’m picturing myself strolling through Central Park and sipping hot chocolate while admiring the colorful leaves … okay, I may be getting a little carried away here, but you get the picture: I love fall!

Link Roundup: Early Fall FavoritiesMost of my fall obsessions revolve around food and fashion, so I thought it would be fun to do an early fall roundup:

One of my favorite San Francisco restaurants, Park Chow, serves a delicious ginger cake dessert that is perfect for fall weather. This Black Sticky Gingerbread from Gizzi Erskine should be a good approximation. Serve it warm with pumpkin ice cream.

Fall is apple picking time, and The Gunny Sack’s Caramel Pecan Apple Bars look like the perfect dessert to make with your harvest. Yum!

When I think fall, I think pumpkin. I’m looking forward to trying a couple new recipes. First up: Pumpkin Cappuccino Chip Muffins – how can you go wrong with pumpkin, coffee, and chocolate? And these Pumpkin Pie Cupcakes look just like mini pumpkin pies.

Sign of fall?I’ve been searching for signs of fall!

There is nothing better in fall than a bowl of steaming, hot chili. I can’t wait until it’s cool enough to cook up a batch of my favorite Quinoa and Sweet Potato Chili. It’s so good and easy to make, too.

You’ll love these Pumpkin Spice Latte Cupcakes. I’ve made this recipe multiple times, and it’s always a crowd-pleaser.

As far as fashion goes, I’m hunting for the perfect fall jacket. I love this Apt. 9 Slubbed Utility Jacket with leather accents at the shoulders. I think it might be the one!

I love to go wine tasting on crisp, cool fall days, but without a car, I won’t be planning any spur of the moment wine country trips any time soon. Instead, I think I’ll get this Let’s Go Wine Tasting on the Couch t-shirt and plan a night in with my husband!

Flat Top RestaurantI predict that Flat Top restaurant will be a fall favorite with my husband and I.

Fall is the perfect time to switch from a bright summer mani/pedi to a deep, dark one, and I’m in love with OPI’s new San Francisco Collection. I’ve already picked up Peace & Love & OPI (a multi-chrome shimmer), Incognito in Sausalito (a super dark blue creme), and Muir Muir on the Wall (a blackened shimmery plum), but I predict that I will go back for more! You can see all of the colors swatched at Vampy Varnish.

For more fashion inspiration, check out my fall fashion Pinterest board – I’ve been pinning like crazy for the past couple of months (told you I was over summer).

What are you looking forward to doing this fall?
