Hello Friday! Link Roundup – Summer Edition!

Today is officially the first day of summer. After living in a city that had mild, cool weather year round, I’m definitely excited to experience the seasons again here in New York. I could live without the humidity, but you can’t win them all!

In honor of the new season, I’ve rounded up some fun links to get your summer started right.

I’m in love with this striped shirt from Tailor and Stylist. A girl can never have enough striped shirts, am I right?

I can’t wait to try this Mexican Street Corn Salad. It looks like an easier to eat version of elote – yum!

Recycle an unworn dress with this tutorial for turning an old dress into a maxi skirt. I may have to give this one a go.

Mastering Rainy Day Style

Here in New York, our weather has been really rainy lately. And inevitably, by the time I get to work my hair is a mess, and I’m soaked from the knees down.

I haven’t mastered the frizzy hair yet (other than relying on a lot of pony tails), but I have invested in a pair of rain boots, which has improved my rainy day style about 100%. Boots are definitely the key to staying dry on the long walk to the train.

Here are three cute looks – planned around three pairs of boots – that will brighten up the rainiest day.

Rainy Day Style: Mod1 / 2 / 3 / 4 / 5 / 6

This look was inspired by the striped sheath dress and fun white boots, which looked a little 60s mod to me. A retro bubble umbrella will keep you dry and won’t hide the fun accessories and polka-dot trench underneath.

Tip: if your boots get scuffed up, try using a little Windex to clean them. It will remove marks and bring the shine back to your boots.

Rainy Day Fashion: Casual1 / 2 / 3 / 4 / 5 / 6 / 7

How cute are these boots? The little bow will cheer you up all day long. Pair your boots with a pair of skinny khakis and a sweet blouse. Simple accessories and a short white trench complete the look.

Rainy Day Fashion: Bright1 / 2 / 3 / 4 / 5 / 6

I love, love, love these lace print boots. They are the perfect complement to the bright, swingy dress and classic trench. Tuck a fun change purse into your tote, grab a striped umbrella, and you are ready to head out the door and face the rain.

Do you love the rain or wish it would stop?

Salted Caramelized Bananas with Ice Cream

I have a major sweet tooth, but I don’t like to keep a lot of treats around my apartment due to my poor impulse control because I like to eat healthy. But sometimes, I just have to have something sweet now. Do you know what I mean?

This recipe for caramelized bananas is the perfect way to conquer any sugar craving. It’s quick, easy, and I usually have all of the ingredients on hand. Plus, it’s got that whole salty-sweet thing going on – yum!

Salted Caramelized Bananas with Ice Cream

Serve 2

  • 3 Tbsp. butter
  • 2 bananas, peeled and sliced
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • Vanilla ice cream
  • Coarse sea salt

Salted Caramelized Bananas with Ice Cream

Melt butter in a small skillet over medium heat. Add bananas and brown sugar. Cook, stirring occasionally, until butter and sugar are well combined and a sauce has formed. The bananas should have softened slightly and will be coated with caramel.

Serve bananas over ice cream and top with a pinch of salt. Eat quickly before the ice cream melts!

Notes: this recipe is easily scaled up or down, so make it for yourself or a crowd. I like to use Maldon Sea Salt Flakes, however you can use any coarse salt you like – just don’t use table salt.

What is your favorite way to conquer a sugar craving?

Hello Friday! Link Roundup

Hey … happy Friday! This week went by fast, and I’m so glad the weekend is here.

I am also a very lucky lady, because our office has summer hours, which means my Fridays end at 3:00 pm for the rest of the summer. Today is the day our summer hours kick in, and I’m super excited!

Jackie Kennedy Onassis Resevoir in Central ParkCheck out that beautiful NYC sky! This is one of my favorite parts of
Central Park – the Jackie Kennedy Onassis Reservoir.

Here are a few things that caught my eye this week:

Make a garland of tissue tassels for your next party. The tassels add such a festive touch and are fun to make, too.

These tissue paper flowers would look great for a party, too!

HydrangeasI was tempted to snip some of these hydrangeas by an empty store in
my neighborhood, but somehow I restrained myself.

Serve this Warm Tomato and Mozzarella Bruschetta at your party.

What is better than a Golden Girls marathon on a lazy Saturday? No much, except maybe a Golden Girls marathon paired with Golden Girl cocktails.

This is so cool – how to make photographic prints on fabric!

subway selfieDon’t mind me … just attempting to make my commute pass more quickly by taking goofy selfies.

I want to try this DIY Scroll Style Picture Frame tutorial ASAP. I just need to find the perfect picture.

It’s been raining a lot lately, and I think it’s time to upgrade my boring black umbrella. Here is a great roundup of cute umbrellas – I want the striped one!

My feet need a little love, so I this post on three steps to pretty summer feet is timely.

Central Park BenchesAnother pretty spot in Central Park.

I love macaroons, so this Glazed Coconut Macaroon Bundt Cake caught my eye right away.

Cherries have been showing up in all the stores, and this Cherry Almond Galette looks delicious. It must be a sign.

I was inspired to recreate this cute, stylish ponytail, and it actually turned out pretty decent. And if you’re trying not to wash your hair everyday, it’s the perfect hairstyle for second day hair.

Selfie with Sock BunAnother great second day hairstyle. The sock bun is Hello Little Home approved!

My new favorite nail polish is Essie Sunday Funday – so cute and summery!

I had the opportunity to hear Joshua Foer speak this week about how he learned a new language in 22 hours. Pretty darn amazing!

If you are still looking for a gift for dad, don’t forget to check out my roundup of last minute Father’s Day gifts.

New York BrownstonesI love the beautiful old brownstones in my neighborhood!

That’s it for this week. I hope you have a great weekend!

Last Minute Father’s Day Gift Ideas

Father’s Day is fast approaching, and if you are anything like me, you’ve waited until the last minute to pick something up.

Don’t worry! I’ve rounded up some great ideas for you.

Last minute Father's Day gifts.

  1. For the dad who loves wine, you can’t go wrong with a great bottle. Gundlach-Bundschu (Gun Bun for short) is one of my favorite California wineries, and your dad will love their Cabernet Sauvignon. How About Orange even has a free Father’s Day bottle tag printable to dress up the bottle.
  2. A stylish dad will like an addition to his wardrobe that he might not buy for himself. Ray Ban Clubmasters are a classic. I actually saw Michael J. Fox in Central Park recently, and he was wearing Clubmasters. If MJF wears them, I’m pretty sure your dad will, too!
  3. If your dad is trying to get in shape, then he’ll appreciate the Fitbit Zip Wireless Activity Tracker. This tiny device clips on to his waistband and tracks steps, distance, and calories burned. He can even compete with his friends throughout the day!
  4. The music lover or dad who travels frequently would love a pair of Bose Noise Cancelling Headphones. These top-of-the-line headphones are the real deal, and what dad doesn’t like to tune everything out once in a while?
  5. For the beer lover whose always toyed with making his own brew, this Brooklyn Brew Shop Beer Making Kit is perfect. The kits contains everything your dad needs to make a gallon of light-bodied Belgian Ale.
  6. If your dad is a whiskey drinker, get him these Dad Whiskey Stones, which are guaranteed to keep his drink cold without making it watery. And splash out and include a nice bottle of whiskey, too – this Redbreast 12 Year Old Whiskey is highly recommended.
  7. Sports lovers will get a kick out of a vintage style hat, like this Brooklyn Bushwicks Ballcap, which is an authentic reproduction of the 1935 cap worn by the team. Pick your dad’s favorite team and you’re all set.
  8. The dad who is still a kid at heart will enjoy this Desktop Ping Pong set. Turn any table into a game of ping pong with the kit and enjoy hours of fun!

What are you getting your dad for Father’s Day?
