Fondue Tips
Whether you're planning a fondue party or a romantic evening for two, keep these helpful tips in mind:
- Maintain the perfect temperature with a fondue pot. Fondue thickens quickly as it cools. The easiest way to keep it warm that is by using a fondue pot. If you have an electric fondue pot, you can cook and serve the fondue right in the same pot. Other pots, like this classic cast iron set can be used on your stovetop, then kept warm with a gel fuel source. Tip: When choosing an fondue pot, think about where you'll be serving it. Do you have an outlet nearby? Then an electric pot may work best for you. Don't have an outlet (or don't want to deal with an unsightly cord? Choose a fondue pot with gel fuel source instead.
- Use fondue forks for dipping. To avoid getting fingers in the fondue, make sure you have enough fondue forks for everyone at your party. I like to give everyone a small plate too, which helps cut down on the mess. And if you're serving things that are difficult to skewer (or fragile), pass out a few small spoons for spooning the fondue over them.
- Choose a variety of dippers, keeping in mind different flavors and texture. You don't need to go overboard when picking dipping foods. Because chocolate fondue is so rich, I recommend choosing a mix of four to six fresh, sweet, and salty options. Dunking sweets into the chocolate is delicious, but it will soon feel cloying if that's all you're eating. Balancing those rich flavors with fresh fruits and salty items, like pretzels or even potato chips, will help clear your palate.
- Prep the ingredients in advance. When getting ready for your party, make sure to cut the dippers into bite-sized pieces. That way, no one has to use their fingers to break things into small pieces, or needs to struggle to fit something in their mouth.
- Don't double dip. Nobody likes germs, so hopefully this goes without saying, but discourage kids (and adults who should know better) from taking a bite then going in for a second dip. Try to avoid putting the dipping fork directly into your mouth, too. (You can always remove the food from the skewer with another fork before popping it into your mouth, if needed.)
- Decide on some rules. Believe it or not, part of the fondue party fun is making some rules! For example, what will happen if someone drops something into the pot? A popular rule is that whoever drops a dipper in the fondue pot must kiss the person next to them (or everyone at the table!). Or maybe your rule will be that the offender must serve the person next to them, top up everyone's drink, or be responsible for the clean up.
40 Delicious Chocolate Fondue Dippers
1. Fresh Fruit
Let's start with a classic! Fresh fruit tastes amazing with fondue, because it's such a bright counterpart to the rich chocolate. Strawberries and bananas are two of the most popular fondue dippers, but other fruits will work great, too ... try oranges, peaches, cherries, apples, berries, and more. Tropical fruits, such as kiwi, star fruit, pineapple, and mango are also delicious and a little more unexpected.
2. Dried Fruit
Dried fruit is also lovely with chocolate! Everything from apricots to mangos, pineapple, cherries, figs, and more goes. You could also include candied fruit, such as candied orange peel or candied ginger.
3. Cookies
Cookies are another traditional dipper, and you can really have fun trying different varieties! Shortbread cookies are always a classic, but don't stop there. Try dipping sugar cookies, chocolate chip cookies, butter cookies, peanut butter cookies (like Nutter Butters), Oreos, or ginger snaps, Pirouette cookies, Nilla Wafers, Stroopwafels, fortune cookies (remove the fortune before dipping!), Bischoff cookies, and more. Tip: Cut (or break) large cookies into bite-sized pieces before serving. That way, they'll be easier to eat. And feel free to hand dip cookies if they're difficult to skewer ... just don't stick your fingers in the fondue!
4. Cookie Dough
Okay, let's get extra decadent and dip some cookie dough! Choose your favorite flavor, then scoop it into small balls. I'd also recommend partially freezing the balls before serving. That way, they won't fall apart in the fondue.

7. Pound Cake
Pound cake is another traditional chocolate fondue dipper. Bake your own or pick up an old school Sara Lee! Tip: Cut the pound cake into cubes and serve it partially frozen, which will help it hold together better.

Angel food cake is another downright delightful thing to dip! You can bake your own from scratch (or from an easy to use mix), or pick up a freshly baked one at the grocery store. Make sure to cut it into cubes before serving, and for an extra special treat, toast the cubes in butter, too!

For a unique treat, set out some banana bread cut into small cubes. Pick one up from the store, or try one of my favorite easy recipes, like this Chocolate Banana Bread, Coconut Banana Bread, or this Strawberry Banana Bread, Tip: Like other fragile dippers, I'd recommend partially freezing the cubes for easier dipping.

For a truly unique sweet choice, you'll love dipping chunks of raw honeycomb! Tip: You may want to drizzle a little of the chocolate right over the honeycomb (rather than submerging it), depending on how well it holds together.
16. Something Cheesy
Cheese + chocolate? Believe it or not, it's a thing, and some people love the combination of flavors! If you want to give it a go yourself, try dipping cheese straws, Cheese Its, Goldfish Crackers, or even small hunks of aged gouda cheese ... then let me know what you think!
17. Biscotti
With their finger-like shape, biscotti are practically begging to be dipped! You can experiment with different flavors (such as chocolate, toffee almond, or pistachio) then choose your favorite!

Cake pops are typically dipped in a candy coating, so why not dip them in hot chocolate? I'd recommend making your own so you can choose your favorite flavor. Check out my Birthday Cake Pops! You can make them with any flavor cake / frosting, and just skip the candy coating (unless you'd like to double dip).
19. Mini Croissants
For a decadent treat, try dunking some mini croissants. This French-inspired dipper is sure to have you licking your lips and going back for seconds!

Mini cream puffs are another treat worth dipping. The combo of flaky pastry, light cream filling, and wam chocolate is truly magic! Look for them at bakeries or the bakery section of your grocery store.
21. Coconut Macaroons
Technically, macaroons are cookies, but I think they deserve a special call out! If you're a fan of Mounds candy bars, you won't be able to resist dunking coconut macaroons into melted chocolate.
22. Mini Ice Cream Balls
For a chocolate fudge sundae experience, try dipping mini ice cream balls into the fondue! This one is a little tricky because you don't want the ice cream to melt. So use a small scoop, then make sure to freeze the balls really well before serving them.
23. Ice Cream Bars
Ice cream bars are another cold treat that you can dip! I think these classic ice cream sandwiches would be super tasty and fun! For best results, cut them up into bite-sized pieces, then refreeze them until very firm before serving.

If you liked the quick bread idea, you'll love dipping mini muffins! Make your own in any flavor you'd like, or try these delicious chocolate chip muffins. I'd recommend serving them semi-frozen, that way they're less likely to fall off your fondue fork.
29. Granola Bars
Why not try dipping your favorite granola bars? I would go for softer, chewy granola bars over crispier ones (they'll be easier to skewer), but any kind will work. And don't forget to cut them into bite-size pieces.
30. Popcorn
Popcorn is another fun and unexpected dipping option. Choose from different flavors, like plain, kettle corn, or even white cheddar if you're curious to try that cheesy dipper I mentioned earlier!
31. Fudge
For a truly decadent treat, dip pieces of your favorite fudge. If you're a true chocoholic, you could do classic fudge. Otherwise, choose a contrasting but complementary flavor, like peanut butter or salted caramel.
32. Nuts
Chocolate + nuts are truly a winning combo! Whether you choose pecans, walnuts, pistachios, almonds, cashews, or another tasty nut, it's hard to go wrong. Tip: Since nuts are so small and difficult to skewer, I'd recommend spooning a little of the fondue onto your plate to swirl them in.
33. Candy Bars
Have a super sweet tooth? Then your favorite candy bars are going to be one of the best things to dip in fondue! This double chocolate treat is perfect chocoholics, and everything from Snickers to Twix to Butterfinger will work. Make sure to cut them into small pieces for easier dipping before serving.

36. Bread
If you're looking for dippers that will cut the fondue's sweetness, consider fresh breads. Toasted pieces of brioche are always tasty, as are baguette cubes. For more dessert-like options, consider sweet breads, such as panettone or babka.
37. Cheesecake
Cheesecake is a dipper that you'll wish you had thought of sooner ... can you think of anything more decadent? Choose your favorite flavor, then cut it into cubes. Because cheesecake has a soft texture, I'd also recommend partially freezing it before serving.
38. Pretzels
For a sweet-salty flavor that will have you returning for seconds (and thirds), don't skip the pretzels! This is another classic dipper, and anything from rods (or sticks) to classic twists will work wonderfully. You could even do soft pretzels. And definitely don't sleep on peanut butter filled pretzels. Yum!
39. Potato Chips
Chocolate fondue + potato chips is another salty-sweet combo you'll love! Trust me, just try it. I'd stick to simple flavors (like plain salt or salt + pepper), and choose a thicker chip, like these tasty kettle chips.
