Ingredients
You only need three ingredients (plus salt and water) to make this crave-worthy recipe:
- Mango - Of course, you'll need fresh mangos (any variety will work). You can tell if a mango is ripe by squeezing it gently. If it's ready to eat, it should have a little give, similar to a fresh peach. Frozen mango can also be used, however you will need to defrost it before starting.
- Sugar - You'll use granulated sugar for this recipe. Not only does the sugar sweeten the dessert, but it also helps give the sorbet it's creamy texture.
- Lime - Fresh lime juice adds a little tartness that helps balance the recipe's sweetness.
- Salt - A pinch of salt is all that's need to bring out the recipe's amazing flavor! I recommend using kosher salt for the best results.
- Water - You need just a little water to thin out the homemade mango puree that forms the based of the recipe.
This recipe is naturally vegetarian, vegan, gluten free, and dairy free ... so everyone can enjoy it!
You'll Also Need
You'll need a blender or food processor to puree the mango, as well as an ice cream maker. Using an ice cream maker helps eliminates ice crystals and makes the finished sorbet super creamy. I have this Cuisinart Ice Cream Maker and highly recommend it! You can use for everything from ice cream to Frozen Yogurt, even drinks, like this refreshing Frosé!
How to Make Mango Sorbet
This recipe is super simple to prepare! You'll find a detailed recipe card below, but here's an overview of the steps:
- Puree mango. Start by peeling and cutting the mango, then add it to your food processor (or blender), along with the sugar, lime juice, water, and salt. Process until totally smooth, stopping to scrape the machine down occasionally to get all the little bits. Once it's pureed, chill the mixture in your refrigerator for at least two hours.
- Add mango mixture to machine. Every ice cream maker is different, so follow you machine's directions. If you're using a ice cream maker like mine, you will start the machine, then once it's running, you'll add the fruit mixture.
- Process until frozen. You'll know it's done when the sorbet has a soft serve texture. This typically takes about 10 to 20 minutes.
- Store in freezer. You can eat the sorbet right away (it will be fairly soft), or you can enjoy it later. To do so, transfer the mixture from your machine to an airtight container before storing in your freezer. Tip: If your sorbet is too hard to scoop once frozen, let it sit on your counter for 10 to 15 minutes first. This will allow it to soften, and will make scooping much easier.
That's all there is to this scrumptious Mango Sorbet recipe. Wasn't that easy? And now it's time for the best part ... time to eat!
Variations
This recipe is pretty perfect as-is, but if you feel like experimenting, try one of these easy ideas next:
- Fruit Combo - Change up the flavor by combining the mango with other fruits, like peaches, pineapple, strawberries, passion fruit, or raspberries. Use any combo you like, just keep in mind that you'll need 2 ½ cups chopped fruit total.
- Mangonada - Layer the sorbet with chamoy, lime juice, and Tajín, then serve with a tamarind straw to create a homemade Mangonada!
- Coconut - Toss in a handful of shredded coconut about five minutes before the sorbet is done.
- Lemon - Replace the lime juice with fresh lemon juice.
- Less Sugar - The amount of sugar here is adjustable. Just keep in mind that the sugar affects the texture, and if you use less, your sorbet may have an icier texture.
Storage
Store any Mango Sorbet Ice Cream you don't eat right away in an airtight container in your freezer. Once frozen, it will stay fresh for up to three months, but will taste best when eaten within one month.
Tip: Sorbet gets pretty hard once frozen. To make it easier to serve after freezing, let it soften on your counter for 10 to 15 minutes before scooping.

Frequently Asked Questions
Sorbet is a frozen fruit dessert that's made from pureed fruit and sugar (or another sweetener). It may also contain other ingredients, such as fresh juice (like the lime juice used here) or even alcohol, but it doesn't contain dairy.
Sorbet and sherbet have similar ingredients and are sometimes confused. However, sherbet typically includes milk or cream which gives it a creamier texture, while sorbet does not.
Ice cream and gelato have a custard base made with milk or cream, while sorbet has a fruit base and is dairy free.
Unlike ice cream, sorbet has no fat. It also has fewer calories than ice cream, and it's full of fruit. It still contains a lot of sugar though, so like most treats, you should probably eat it in moderation.
