Easter is usually a pretty casual affair around here. I've always loved getting together with a big group for the holiday. My husband and I live far away from our families though, so we usually celebrate with just the two of us.
It's not quite as sad as it sounds ... cooking my favorite Easter recipes, like these adorable Bunny Cupcakes, definitely helps. But this year, I thought I'd do a few things to make the day more special.
Since I love a quick and easy craft, I was inspired to make these adorable Mason Jar Easter Baskets!
Mason Jar Easter Baskets
Mason jars have got to be one of the most versatile kitchen tools.
They're great for canning, of course, but they're wonderful for servings drinks, storing odds and ends, and so much more. And I think you'll love this easy mason jar craft idea for Easter, too!
It took me just a few minutes to make these Mason Jar Easter Baskets ... they really couldn't be simpler to create!
My favorite part of these mini Easter baskets just might be the DIY tissue paper flowers that top the lids. Aren't they cute?
Those adorable DIY tissue paper flowers are quick and fun to make. Each one starts with a stack of tissue paper circles that are stapled in the middle. To create the petals, simply scrunch the layers. It couldn't be easier.
I used a pack of ombre tissue paper for my flowers, which was perfect because I was able to get a range of flower shades. I love how they look together! Any color tissue paper would work fine though.
This Easter mason jar craft makes a wonderful holiday gift idea.
You could also include them in a colorful holiday table setting (place them in front of the plates or on top) or give them out as an adorable Easter party favor. They also make a sweet Easter gift for someone that's too old for a full basket.
However you use them, these mini Easter baskets are sure to be a hit with your whole family!
How to Make Mason Jar Easter Baskets
Want to make your own Mason Jar Easter Baskets? Here's what you'll need:
- tissue paper (I used this ombre tissue paper.)
- double sided tape
- mason jars
- chocolate bunnies (I used Russell Stover Solid Milk Chocolate Bunnies.)
- Easter candy (I used M&M's Peanut Butter Speckled Eggs.)
Stack the tissue paper so you have 8 layers. Grab a ring from one of the mason jars, then trace around it with the pen.
Staple the center of the circle (remember, there should be 8 layers).
Then, cut out the circles.
To make the DIY tissue paper flowers, scrunch each tissue paper layer, starting in the center and working your way down to the bottom layer. The top layers should have the most scrunching, and the bottom layers should have the least.
After you've scrunched all the layers, zhush the flower a bit until you like how it looks.
Stick a piece of double sided tape on the center back of the flower, then attach it to the center of the mason jar lid.
Next, you'll need the jars. Most mason jars have raised printing on all sides. I like these Kerr mason jars, because one side is smooth, and you can see the goodies inside the jar better.
Make sure the bunnies you choose will fit inside your jars. I used Russell Stover Solid Milk Chocolate Bunnies (1.5 oz./43 gram size), and they slid into the jars perfectly ... not every bunny fits!
Hold the bunny lightly by its ears, place it in the jar, then pour the candy around it. I used M&M's Peanut Butter Speckled Eggs, which are delicious and cute, but any small Easter candy will work. Jelly beans would be cute, too.
Add just enough candy to hold the bunny in place. Wiggle the bunny around until it stands up straight, if you need to.
Screw on the flower-topped lid, and you're done.
That's it ... wasn't it easy?
These mini baskets would be perfect for a party. You could crank out quite a few in a short amount of time!
My favorite thing about these Mason Jar Easter Baskets is definitely the DIY tissue paper flowers ... they are just so cute!
These flowers are perfect for all kinds of crafts, so don't limit yourself to these mini Easter baskets.
They're perfect for decorating gifts, or you could even attach a pin back (use a little hot glue) for a sweet paper flower brooch.
Customize Your Mason Jar Easter Baskets
Of course, these mini Easter baskets are totally customizable! Here are a few ideas:
- Paint the lids a cheery spring color.
- Use silk flowers instead of the paper flowers.
- Layer together different colors of tissue paper for a multi-hued flower.
- Add a ribbon around the lid (attach it with hot glue).
- Fill the bottom of the jar with grass before you add the bunny and candy.
- Attach a pretty gift tag.
