Ingredients
You can find the ingredients for this easy summer dessert in any grocery store! Here's what you'll need:
- Fruit - This recipe calls for a combination of strawberries and blueberries, but raspberries and blackberries would also work great.
- Sugar - You'll macerate the strawberries in a little granulated sugar, which brings out their juices and makes them perfectly sweet.
- Custard - The berries are layered with a simple custard made with cream cheese, powdered sugar, vanilla extract, and milk (any kind, regular or plant based). In a hurry, substitute vanilla yogurt for the custard!
- Cake - I used ladyfingers (which are a type of finger-shaped sponge cake), but you could use other cakes (such as yellow, white, or angel food) instead.
- Cups - You'll also need six small glasses or jars to assemble the trifles.
This recipe is naturally vegetarian and nut free. You could use dairy free products to make it vegan / dairy free, and gluten free cake to make it GF, too.
How to Make Mixed Berry Mini Trifles
You'll be surprised how simple this easy trifle recipe is to make! Here's a quick overview of the steps (you'll find a detailed recipe card below):
- Macerate strawberries. The first thing you'll want to do is combine the strawberries with a little sugar. Set them aside while you work on the other ingredients, and the sugar will draw the juices out of the berries.
- Make custard. Next, you'll work on the custard, which is almost like a no bake cheesecake. It's a combination of cream cheese, powdered sugar, vanilla, and milk. Simply mix everything until smooth and then it's time to assemble your trifles.
- Assemble. To create these mini desserts, you'll layer ladyfingers, with the cream cheese mixture, strawberries, and fresh blueberries. Tip: You'll need a clear container to layer the ingredients. I used plastic cups, which are perfect for parties. But any small glass, as well as mini trifle bowls or even small mason jars would work, too.
- Refrigerate. It's tempting to dig right in, but this dessert needs to be refrigerated for about four hours before servings. This allows the ladyfingers to absorb liquid from the other ingredients and for the flavors to blend.
Then, it's time to eat your mini layered dessert! These simple Mixed Berry Mini Trifles are sure to be a hit whenever you serve them. Make sure to let me know what you think.

What is your favorite summer treat?
I made these last summer with home made pound cake and they were a huge crowd pleaser! I am making them again for a cookout this weekend. Do you think the cream cheese mixture could be made the day before? Stored in a bag in the fridge then I can just spoon it in the day of?
Hi Sarah! I'm so glad they were a hit. You could definitely make the cream cheese mixture ahead of time. Just remove it from your refrigerator a bit ahead of time so that it's spoonable. Have a great weekend! 🙂
These look so good, I would like to make them to take to a party but I would need much more than 6, is there a way to make it in a larger container for a crowd? I do like how the individual ones look but I'm not sure how many times I would need to increase the ingredients to make more.
Hi Kathi! You could definitely make more and serve it in a standard trifle dish or another large bowl, or even a large rectangular pan. I haven't tested the recipe this way, but I think you could double the recipe and make it in a 9 x 13-inch pan to serve 12 or more people. Hope that helps!
AMAZING!! 😋 I used Angel food cake and added a handful of extra powdered sugar cuz I didn’t add sugar to the strawberries. I put them in the desert raw! EVERYONE LOVED THEM!! Kids and adults 🥰
Hi, Jennifer! I'm so happy to hear y'all enjoyed the recipe. Thank you so much for the review! 🙂
