Ingredients
This vegan + vegetarian-friendly recipe uses minimal ingredients, and you can find them in most grocery stores. Here's what you'll need:
- Veggie Hot Dogs - You will need eight vegan hot dogs for this recipe. I used these Lightlife Smart Dogs, but these Field Roast Stadium Dogs would also work great! There are only six hot dogs in the Field Roast package though, so you may want to buy an extra pack if you use those.
- Crescent Rolls - Refrigerated crescent rolls give this recipe its classic flavor. These Immaculate Baking Crescent Rolls are a great vegan option.
- Toppings - A sprinkle of Everything but the Bagel Seasoning, sesame seeds, or poppy seeds before baking is optional, but makes a delicious finishing touch.
- Dipping Sauce - When it comes to dipping sauce, you've got lots of tasty options! I've include recipes for two homemade dipping sauces. A homemade Vegan Honey Mustard made with vegan mayonnaise, dijon mustard, and maple syrup. Plus, a yummy Old Bay flavored sauce made with vegan mayonnaise, ketchup, and Old Bay Seasoning. Feel free to make one, or both, or use a different sauce (you'll find more ideas below).
This recipe is simple to customize with different doughs, sausages, dipping sauces, and more! Check out the Variations section below for lots of ideas.
You'll Also Need
You'll need a knife to cut the hot dogs, and a knife or pizza cutter (this one is similar to mine) to cut the crescent rolls, as well as a baking sheet (these sheet pans are my fave!) to cook the hot dogs, and a small bowl to mix the dipping sauce.
How to Make Vegan Pigs in a Blanket
This tasty vegan appetizer recipe couldn't be easier to make! You'll find a detailed recipe card below, but here's an overview of the steps:
- Cut the hot dogs. Start by cutting each hot dogs into thirds.
- Prep the crescent rolls. Unwrap the crescent rolls, then separate the individual triangles along the perforation marks. Cut each triangle into three strips. (A pizza cutter works great for this!)
- Wrap the hot dogs. Place one hot dog piece on the wide end of a crescent roll strip, then roll it up. Repeat with the remaining ingredients. Don't worry if they don't look perfect ... once they bake, the dough will puff up and hide any imperfections!
- Add the topping. Sprinkle the tops of the crescent wrapped hot dogs with Everything but the Bagel Seasoning, sesame seeds, or poppy seeds. You could also leave some (or all) of them plain, if you prefer.
- Bake. Transfer the wrapped dogs to a baking sheet (no need to grease if it's nonstick), then bake until golden brown.
- Make the sauce. While the recipe cooks, stir together the dipping sauces.
And that's all there is to it, your delicious Vegan Pigs in a Blanket are ready to eat. This is one party snack that no one can resist, so don't be surprised if your guests request a second batch!

Variations
This simple recipe can be customized with just a few changes! Here are some ideas:
- Dough - Feel free to swap out the crescent rolls for another dough. Puff pastry (this vegan pastry is easy to find) would work great, just make sure to defrost it a day ahead. You could also use biscuit or pizza dough. You may need to adjust the cooking time, depending on what kind you use..
- Sausage - This recipe would be delicious made with veggie sausages, too! Try it with these Italian Garlic & Fennel flavored sausages, or even these Breakfast Links. Just keep in mind that you might need to pre-cook the sausages first, depending on what you choose. Also, if you're using a larger sausage, you may want to cut the crescent rolls into larger pieces, too.
- Cheesy - Give this recipe a cheesy twist, by cutting a small slit into your hot dogs, then tucking in small piece of nondairy cheese before wrapping in the crescents.
- Full Size - Turn this appetizer into a full meal by wrapping a whole hot dog in a whole crescent. This is a family favorite that no one at your table will be able to resist! The kids could even help you make them.
- Dipping Sauce - Have fun experimenting with different dipping sauces, like BBQ sauce (I like Sweet Baby Ray's), vegan ranch, homemade buffalo sauce or pesto mayo (use vegan mayo and skip the cheese in the pesto), even leftover cranberry sauce. Plain old ketchup and mustard (I love dijon!) are always delish, too!
- Halloween Treat - For your favorite spooky holiday, turn these piggies into Mummy Hot Dogs. It's super easy!

No, Pillsbury Crescent Rolls are not vegan. They used to be accidentally vegan, but they've changed their ingredient list to include L-Cysteine, which is an animal-derived dough conditioner.
Yes, you can make Pigs in a Blanket ahead of time. I'd recommend prepping them the morning of (or the night before) your party, then storing them in a single layer on a baking sheet (unbaked).
