Combine cider, orange slices, lemon slice, cinnamon sticks, cloves, and star anise in a medium, heavy bottomed pot.
Bring mixture just to a boil, stirring occasionally.
When the cider starts to boil, immediately reduce the heat to medium. Simmer for 15 minutes (stirring occasionally), or until the cider is infused with the citrus and spices.
Serve hot or warm, garnished with cinnamon sticks and slice apples. Enjoy!
Notes
Servings -This recipe makes 8 servings (1 cup each). Depending on the size of your mugs (or the generosity of your pours), it may not go quite as far.Easiest Version - For a simpler version, just use the cinnamon sticks and skip the other spices and fruit. This is the way we made it when I was a kid, and it's still a favorite.Sweetener - Depending on the apples it's made with, cider's flavor can range from tangy to sweet. Taste the mulled cider before serving, then stir in some brown sugar or maple syrup (start with a couple tablespoons, then gradually add more to taste), if you'd like. You could also add caramel sauce for a yummy caramel apple flavor.Doubling the Recipe - Feel free to double or triple the recipe for a party. You can keep it warm in a slow cooker, or on medium-low heat. Because it's unfiltered, cider has a tendency to settle, so remember to stir it occasionally.More Tips - Check out the info before this recipe card for helpful tips, recipe variations, serving suggestions (lot of fall treats + sweets), and more!
