Pour milk into a small saucepan. Whisk in cocoa powder and sugar until combined.
Heat over medium heat until hot, continuing to whisk. Do not boil.
Add alcohol, then divide among 2 to 3 mugs.
Serve plain or topped with whipped cream and / or toppings. Enjoy!
Prepare Whipped Cream:
Combine heavy cream and sugar in a stand mixer bowl.
Using the whisk attachment, mix until cream holds a medium to stiff peak (depending on preference), gradually increasing speed as cream gains more body.
Notes
Hot chocolate pairs well with so many different types of liquor / liqueur, like amaretto, raspberry or coffee liqueur, schnapps, Irish cream, and more. I usually prefer do it this way, that way you can try different spirits, or leave it out the booze for kids and adults who don't drink. This recipe is easily made vegan simply by using nondairy milk. Coconut milk is my favorite for cocoa, but any variety works. You can also make the whipped cream using a hand mixer, or you could even whip it by hand ... it doesn't take as long as you'd think with a small amount of cream.Make this drink extra special by adding additional toppings, such as marshmallows, shaved chocolate, crushed candy canes, and more.
