I'm heading to Wisconsin later this week to visit my sister and niece, and I couldn't be more excited! I haven't seen them since the fall, so a little girl time is long overdue.
My sister lives in the same town that we grew up in. It's always interesting to go back, run into old classmates, eat at the restaurant where I had my first job, and check out all the changes. Some things never change though, particularly when it comes to small town Wisconsin!
Of course, this got me thinking of travel style, especially what to wear to the airport and what to pack, including my carry-on essentials.
This is the out fit I'm planning to wear to the airport. It's easy, comfortable, and will get me through the day without any distractions.
Cardigan: J.Crew (color is no longer available); T-Shirt (old): similar, similar; Jeans: Loft; Flats: Lucky Brand; Sunglasses: Ray-Ban; Scarf (old): similar; Bag (old): similar, similar; Earrings (vintage): similar
My travel style always involves layers, especially when it's by air, and I could be steaming hot one minute and freezing cold the next.
This outfit makes it easy to strip down to my tee if I get too hot, like I did when taking these photos. It's been in the 80's here the past few days, and I'm not quite ready for summer yet!
I have my carry-on packing down to a science:
- Big tote or bag. I like to pack everything in a large tote, or for a shorter trip like my upcoming one, I'll carry a bag that I can use throughout my vacation.
- Small wallet. Instead of carrying around every card I own, I pare them down to the essentials and use a smaller wallet. Less to lose!
- Sunglasses. For the blinding sun that will inevitably be streaming through my window at some point.
- Entertainment. This takes up the most room in my bag. I like lots of variety, since I never know what will hold my interest. I'll pack a book (something fluffy, like The Next Best Thing), 3 - 4 magazines, book of games (love my Pocket Posh Crosswords Book), iPad (loaded with games and eBooks), and my phone (my new Fine Fellow case is a favorite).
- Snack. I always pack a couple energy bars, and once I get through security, I buy bottle of water. That way, I'm not dependent on the attendant for a drink or starving and forced to buy an expensive meal on the plane.
- Zip Lock for liquids. Once I get through security, I'll pull out my lip gloss, hand sanitizer, and eye drops and throw everything else into my carry-on suitcase.
- Extras. Gum, oil blotting sheets, sanitizing wipes, scarf, tissues, etc.
Now I just need to pick out the rest of my outfits, pack my suitcase, and take off!
Do you have a favorite travel outfit? What are your carry-on essentials?

Great tips!
Thanks, Nicole!
I almost always bring a scarf when I travel - I always seem to get cold at the weirdest times! I always need lots of entertainment too! Have fun!
Thanks, Lana! I love scarves for travel, too. They take up so little space and are such a great way to change up your outfits:)
Great essentials! I definitely agree with dressing in layers! For some reason I'm not a magazine reader on planes! So bizarre! I always just end up playing games on my phone or sleeping when I can. A scarf that can double as a wrap is perfect for napping! Otherwise, just gum and earplugs are my must haves on the plane!
Thanks, Carylee! I need to remember earplugs next time - I was stuck over the wing on the way out, and it was so noisy!
Great tips. I am all about layering...and snakcs (hehe!) too.
Thanks for linking up for MMG!
Thanks, Leeann! The snacks are always the best part, right?!?
Hi Ginnie, I love your travel outfit. It looks comfortable and stylish at the same time. I love that big bag too. It's so hard to pack lightly and I try to pack with mix and match outfits. Have a nice trip.

Thanks, Julie! I love a big bag when I travel:)
I love these tips! I don't travel a lot, but when I do I have the hardest time picking what to bring and I always bring way toooo much!
Thanks, Heather! I've definitely changed my packing ways over the years. It's so nice to just travel with a carryon, instead of waiting an hour for luggage;)
Hey! I'm from WI! It's good for a visit but I love my FL Sunshine. Great post and love the ideas! =-)

Oh ... another former Wisconsonite;) I have family in FL, too, and love visiting them!
This was fun to read. I know you will enjoy your stay in Wisconsin.
Hi, Amy! I'm so glad you stopped by! It's just a quick trip, but it should be a lot of fun. We will have to have a neighbors reunion sometime:)
