I'm going to admit right away: my skin has always driven me nuts! I have combination skin, and with my oily t-zone (forehead, nose, and chin) and cheeks that alternate between dry and normal, choosing the right products has always been a challenge.
With some experience and experimentation, I've learned how to deal with my combination skin. It may not be perfect, but that doesn't mean it can't look great.
Today, I'm showing you how to get beautiful, glowing skin ... no matter your skin type. It's simple with my tips and tricks!
1. Develop a Consistent Skin Care Routine
If you want to have gorgeous skin, developing a consist skin care routine is the most important thing you can do. Exfoliation is especially important.
My skin is blemish-prone and tricky, so I've definitely been tempted by harsh products. That just makes things worse though. It's much better for your skin to use products that cleanse thoroughly but gently.
Lately, I've been using Bioré Baking Soda Cleansing Scrub. I love Bioré (my obsession began with the Pore Strips), so I couldn't wait to try their new scrub!
My skin feel super smooth and soft after using this scrub. The best part though is that it's really gentle on my skin.
Bioré Baking Soda Cleansing Scrub is made with baking soda, a natural cleansing ingredient and exfoliator. It's a powder scrub, which is really unique.
Plus, it's fun to use! Simply add a quarter sized amount of the scrub to the palm of your hand. Add water and then the fun part begins: the scrub starts to fizz! Tip: use more water for less exfoliation or less water for a stronger scrub.
Apply the scrub to your wet face and massage in a circular motion. Be gentle with your scrubbing; just let the scrub do all the work. After a couple minutes, rinse your skin well. Your pores with be clearer and any dry flaky skin will be smoother, all without over-scrubbing.
I like to keep this scrub in my shower to use in the morning, two to three days a week. It really wakes up my skin and creates a smooth base for makeup!
I've been alternating this scrub with Bioré Baking Soda Cleansing Scrub, a daily pore cleanser that's also great for dissolving deep down dirt and oil while gently exfoliating.
Do you have oily skin? Try Bioré Charcoal products instead! They are especially made for your oily skin.
2. Avoid Heavy Foundations and Concealers
If your skin is less than perfect, it can be really tempting to layer on heavy foundation, concealer, and powder. Trust me, I know that temptation well! Don't do this though. At best, all these layers will make you look like you're wearing a mask. At worst, all those products will highlight the flaws you're trying to hide.
Instead, look for lighter makeup that let your natural skin show through a bit. I prefer using BB and CC creams (Supergoop! is my fave) instead of foundation. These products do wonders for improving the look of your skin without looking like you're wearing a ton of makeup.
Another trick is to mix a heavier foundation with a little sunblock or moisturizer. The foundation will go on smoother and more sheer. I'm wearing a mix of foundation and sunscreen in these photos.
Apply concealer and powder with similar restraint, just to the places you need it.
3. Add Color and a Touch of Shine
A little color is essential to creating beautiful, glowing skin, especially if you are pale like me.
I never, ever skip blush. It does wonders for waking up your skin, and it adds a little definition to your face, too.
When choosing products, look for creams or gels. Both will blend in with your skin beautifully for a completely natural look. If you are using powder, choose one that is sheer.
To add extra glow to my skin, I also like to apply a touch of highlighter to the tops of my cheek bones, center of my forehead, and bridge of my nose. If you have combination or oily skin, you definitely want to select a highlighter that's on the subtle side, otherwise you'll just look oily.
Don't forget your lips! I love lip crayons. They're easy to use and come in tons of flattering colors. Lip crayons come in both matte and glossy formulas. If you're going for beautiful, glowing skin, make sure to choose the glossy kind.
I like my lips shiny, so I layered a sheer lip gloss over the lip crayon.
Adding definition to your face will help your skin shine. Like I mentioned in the previous tip, blush is great for this. If you are feeling really pale, a little bronzer does wonders and can help contour the face if applied properly, too.
My favorite feature is my eyes, so I like to define them. For this look, I choose four natural, rosy shades (I used Maybelline's Blushed Nudes Palette), but it will work with your favorite colors, too. Before applying eye shadow, I lined my eyes (upper lash line and waterline/inner rim) with brown eyeliner.
Start by applying a shade close to your skin tone all over your lid (lashes to brow bone). Then, apply a medium shade just over your lids (lashes to crease). Blend the two colors where they meet.
Apply the darkest shade in a v-shape at the outside edge of the eye (in the crease, outer corner, and along the lash line. Blend again. Finish the look by applying a pale color to your brow bone and the inner corners of your eyes.
Add your favorite mascara (I love L'Oreal Voluminous Butterfly Mascara), and you are ready to show off those gorgeous eyes! I love how this makes my eyes pop, and it balance out my other makeup.
The Result ... Beautiful, Glowing Skin!
I hope these tips helped you learn how to get beautiful, glowing skin!
