I've never been one to purchase my costume. I just have way too much fun coming up with my own ideas.
Plus, most of the costumes available are cheap and generic, or worse, oddly sexy. Sure I want to look good, but do I really want to be a sexy cop, hot dog, minion (yes, it's a real thing), etc.? I don't think so!
Here are three DIY Halloween costume ideas that are cute, creative, and easy to put together!
Holly Golightly
Breakfast at Tiffanys is one of those movies I've watched a million times. Definitely one of my favorite Audrey Hepburn flicks, and Holly Golightly is such an iconic caracter!
Start by wearing a long black cocktail dress with a high neck. Add a multi-strand pearl necklace with a crystal or pearl center and a pair of matching button earrings (the one I've linked is a set). Add a pair of black pumps (or flats, if you'll be on your feet all night), opera length gloves, and black sunglasses.
Holly Golightly's hair is styled in a French Twist and then piled on top of her head. If you have long brown hair, this should be easy to do yourself. For other hair colors, this beehive wig will give you similar look. Just tuck that curl behind the ear, and cut the bangs shorter. Whether you're styling your own hair or donning a wig, pin a crystal brooch to the crown of your head.
Bonus: carry a long cigarette holder, paper coffee cup, and pastry bag.
Mary Poppins
I've always wanted to dress up as Mary Poppins. Maybe this will be the year!
This DIY Halloween costume idea has lots of layers, so it's perfect if you'll be spending any time outside. Simply remove the jacket once the party moves inside.
Choose a high neck blouse and tie a red ribbon in a bow at the neck. Pair the blouse with a midi-length skirt, black tights, and Mary Jane shoes. Top this outfit off with a black trench coat.
Mary Poppin's costume is all about the accessories! Carry a duckhead umbrella, pull on some white gloves, carry a tapestry handbag, and wrap a striped scarf around your neck.
Of course, Mary Poppin's pièce de résistance is her quirky hat. Start with a straw boater hat and hot glue on some daisies and faux cherries.
Little Red Riding Hood
For a DIY Halloween costume that doesn't take a million items to put together, you can't go wrong with Little Red Riding Hood!
Start with a white fit and flare dress, then add a cute blue apron over it. Add an adorable pair of red Mary Janes and warm black tights, then top off your outfit with a red cape ... hopefully, that creepy guy doesn't come with it!
Don't forget the basket ... how cute is that one? Bonus: fill it with treats for granny, like cookies, a copy of the latest People magazine, wine, etc.!
What is your favorite Halloween costume?
P.S. Check out my DIY Halloween costume ideas from last year (Beverly Goldberg, Pippi Longstocking, and Orange is the New Black) and the year before that (Katniss Everdeen, Carrie, The Royal Family, and Donatella Versace), too!
