The minute the weather starts to cool off, my hands and other extremities start to dry out.
It's like clockwork ... very annoying clockwork.
I love experimenting with my own DIY beauty products, especially scrubs. They're so easy to make, and I like that they aren't full of mystery chemicals.
If you choose the right ingredients, homemade scrubs can also be very soothing for dry skin.
Lemon Lavender Sugar Scrub
I whipped up this Lemon Lavender Sugar Scrub recipe over the weekend, and I'm in love!
It was so easy to make, and the sugar smoothed out my flaky skin, and the coconut oil left my hands so soft and silky.
I've been experimenting a little with essentials oils, and I love the combination of lemon and lavender. I added a few drops of each to this scrub for a beautiful, subtle scent.
You can easily make this body scrub your favorite oils. Or even leave out the essential oils altogether for an unscented scrub, like I did with my basic version of this scrub, a simple Coconut Oil Sugar Scrub.
This homemade Lavender Lemon Sugar Scrub is so quick and easy to make. Whip up a batch for yourself, plus some for a friend.
It would be a truly thoughtful DIY gift for your girlfriends this holiday season, and you can put together a bunch of jars in minutes.
Even my husband loved the lemon lavender scent in this DIY sugar scrub, so don't rule out the guys either!
Sugar Scrub Ingredients
Want to make your own DIY scrub? Here's what you'll need:
- ½ cup + 2 tbsp. sugar - I used organic cane sugar, which is a little more course than standard sugar.
- ¼ cup + 1 tbsp. coconut oil
- lemon essential oil
- lavender essential oil
- 8 oz. mason jar or other similar container
How to Make Lemon Lavender Sugar Scrub
This recipe is so easy! Simply combine the coconut oil and the sugar in a small bowl and mix well.
If your coconut oil is solid, microwave it for a few seconds to melt it.
After you've combined the sugar and coconut oil, it's time to add the essential oils. I used 8 drops of lemon and 5 drops lavender, which was just enough for a subtle scent, which I prefer.
Of course, you can always add your favorite oils or combination of oils, too.
After the Lemon Lavender Sugar Scrub is blended together, transfer it to a mason jar or other container. This recipe makes the perfect amount for an 8-ounce jar.
For my scrub, I used these cute jam jars.
There are a lot of other jar options, too. I especially likes these adorable jars with gingham lids, and these Weck jars are really sharp.
In an airtight jar, the scrub should keep for a couple months, as long as you don't store it anywhere too hot or cold.
Packaging the Scrub for a Gift
To package my scrub for gift giving, I wrapped jute twine a few times around the jar's neck. For the lid, I also cut out a circle (I used this flamingo cardstock), then labeled it with a gel pen.
It turned out really cute and was simple to do.
If you don't like your handwriting, you could easily create a label for the lid (or tie it on with the twine) using an online design / photo editing program like Picmonkey or Microsoft Word.
How to Use Sugar Scrub
To use this Lemon Lavender Sugar Scrub, place a small amount on your hands or other body parts.
Gently scrub for a few minutes, then wash off the sugar with warm water.
Blot dry, and gently massage in any coconut oil that remains on your skin.
