Place Card Etiquette
Do you know the etiquette surrounding place cards? Here are a few tips to keep in mind when planning your seating:
- Include every guest. Avoid skipping anyone's name, even if they are a plus-one. And make sure to spell each name correctly!
- Use first names. Unless it's a formal event, you can address the cards with the guest's first name only. For more formal meals, use first and last names (and a title, if you wish).
- Start with the hosts when arranging seats. Hosts typically sit at either end of the table, or facing each other in the middle of the table with guests on either side.
- Seat couples together. Everyone will be more comfortable and have someone they can easily talk to.
- Make sure the cards are readable. Use a pen color that's easily readable (even in dim lighting), and make sure your handwriting is legible, as well.
- Display the place card. Arrange the place card centered on the place setting, above the place setting, or in a place card holder. One seated, guests can turn the cards the other way so they can be read by the people seated across from them. This makes keeping everyone's name straight easier in a situation with many strangers.
- If a guest doesn't show up, adjust the seating plan. Remove the place setting and scoot the seats closer together so there isn't a hole in the middle of the table.
- If you're a guest, don't move the seating cards. It's just rude, and your host sat you there for a reason.
Supplies
If you would like to attach these leaf name cards to mini pumpkin like I did, here are the supplies you'll need:
- Paper - Print the PDF files on white card stock for the best results.
- Scissors - You'll use the scissors to cut out the leaves.
- Pen - To add names. I used a Pitt Artist Pen, but any kind of pen will work as long as it won't bleed through the paper. Calligraphy pens are another great option!
- Hole Punch - A hole punch is needed to attach the twine to the cards.
- Pumpkins - These colorful mini pumpkins are similar to the ones I used. You could also use white pumpkins or even velvet pumpkins, and of course, real pumpkins would work, too.
- Twine - You'll attach the name cards to the pumpkins with twine. Ribbon would also work great.
Assembling the Thanksgiving Name Cards
These name cards a super easy to put together!
- Print + cut out leaves. Start by printing the leaves on white card stock. Then cut them out. Tip: Print extra cards just in case you make a mistake ... I always have a few!
- Add the names. Use a pen to write your guests' names on the cards
- Punch hole. Use the hole punch to create a hole on one end of the leaf.
- Add twine. Thread a long piece of twine (at least 8-inches) through the hole.
- Tie card to pumpkin. Use a bow to tie each card to a mini pumpkin.
And that's all there is to it! If you have a lot of place cards to assemble, you'll save time by putting them together assembly line style.
