While I love a fancy appetizer, if forced to choose a favorite snack, I'd definitely go with a classic dip. There's just something so delicious and satisfying about dipping crispy chips and crunchy veggies into a creamy dip. This easy Sour Cream Dip recipe is one of my favorites! It's loaded with fresh herbs, and has a bright lemony flavor that's absolutely irresistible. Perfect for easy entertaining or a scrumptious snack!

    Ingredients

This creamy dip recipe is made with basic, easy to find ingredients! Here's what you'll need:

    • Sour Cream - You'll need some sour cream, of course! I recommend using full fat for the richest, creamiest flavor.
    • Herbs - This recipe uses a classic combination of fresh herbs: dill, chives, and Italian parsley (flat leaf).
    • Green Onions - Fresh green onions (scallions) add a zippy flavor to the dip.
    • Lemon - A little fresh lemon juice and zest enhances the other ingredients and adds a bright flavor that provides a light counterpoint the rich sour cream.
    • Salt + Pepper - I recommend using kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper for the best flavor.

This recipe is naturally vegetarian, nut free, and gluten free! Check out the Variations section below for tips on adapting the recipe to other diets.

How to Make Sour Cream and Herb Dip

This homemade Sour Cream Dip is super quick and easy to make, and you'll find a detailed recipe card below with all the measurements. But basically, you just combine all the ingredients in a bowl, then mix everything together.

It doesn't get any easier, and you can prep the recipe in advance for parties. In fact, the dip is tastiest when made ahead of time and refrigerated so the flavors can blend together!

    Variations

Feel like experimenting? Here are a few ideas to try:

    • Herbs - Experiment with your favorite herbs. Any soft herb (such as basil, chives, dill, cilantro, parlsey, or tarragon) will work, and you can use a single herb or a combination.
    • Garlic - For a milder garlic flavor, use garlic powder. A little onion powder would also make a delicious addition.
    • Spicy - Like a little heat? Add cayenne or hot sauce to taste.
    • Vegan + Dairy Free - For a vegan / dairy free option, simply use plant based sour cream.

    Serving Suggestions

This homemade dip can be enjoyed as a chip dip, a veggie dip, or you can pair it with both! Here's are some of my go-to dippers:

    • Veggies - Serve with your favorite vegetables, like grape tomatoes, carrot or celery sticks, sliced bell peppers, broccoli or cauliflower florets, pea pods, or cucumber slices.
    • Chips - Crispy chips make an amazing pairing. These salt and pepper kettle chips are my fave!
    • Crostini - Crunchy homemade Garlic Crostini is delicious paired with the creamy dip.
    • Crackers + Pretzels - A handful of crackers or pretzels goes great, too. Try my easy Herb Parmesan Crackers recipe if you'd like to try making your own!
    • Pita Chips - Serve with these crispy Pita Chips for something different. The recipe is a great way use up leftover bread.
    • Potatoes - This dip would be delish used as a topping for baked potatoes, served as a dipping sauce for fries, or mixed into mashed potatoes (check out my Mashed Potatoes with Sour Cream for inspo)!

    Storage

Store leftover dip in an airtight container in your refrigerator, where it will stay fresh for three to four days.
