    Ginnie's Take

This simple Radish Sandwich is a tasty twist on a classic French snack: radis au beurre (buttered radishes). Pairing colorful, crunchy radishes with butter takes away their sharp, peppery bite, and turns them into a mouthwatering treat. This open faced sandwich is beyond easy to make, yet is tastes surprisingly luxurious. You won't be able to resist this delectable sandwich!

    Why You'll Love This Recipe

    • Easy to Make - You can prepare this simple sandwich in minutes. And after you've made it once, you'll hardly need a recipe. It's so easy!
    • Simple Ingredients - This recipe calls for just four ingredients, and they're all available in any grocery store.
    • So Delicious - Butter, radishes, and salt are a match made in heaven, especially when paired with a crusty baguette. You will crave this delightful combo.

    Ingredients

This recipe uses the simplest of ingredients! Here's what you'll need:

    • Radishes - You will need some fresh radishes, of course. Look for firm radishes with smooth unblemished skin.
    • Bread - For best results, use a freshly-baked baguette from a local bakery. If that's not an option, take and bake baguettes also work great. Just make sure to let the bread cool completely before buttering it.
    • Butter - Because you'll be adding salt, choose a high-quality unsalted butter for this recipe. See my tips below for picking the right one!
    • Salt - This is the perfect recipe for your fancy finishing salts! Le Saunier De Camargue Fleur de Sel and Maldon Sea Salt Flakes are two of my faves.

This recipe is naturally vegetarian. To make it vegan / dairy free, choose a plant based butter. For a gluten free option, use a GF baguette.

PRO TIP: For the best flavor, choose an unsalted, European-style butter, which will have a higher butterfat content and richer flavor. Easy to find Kerrygold is an excellent option, as is Plugra (which is what I used). Of course, French butters, like Beurre D’Isigny are also delicious, if you can find them.

How to Make a Radish Butter Sandwich

This Radish and Butter Sandwich is super quick and easy to prepare! You'll find a detailed recipe card with measurements below, but here's an overview of the steps:

    1. Butter baguette. Start by cutting your baguette in half, then butter each half generously with unsalted butter.
    2. Sprinkle with salt. Top the butter with a sprinkle of salt.
    3. Add radishes. Slice your radishes paper thin, then layer them over the buttered bread.
    4. Top with more salt. Sprinkle another pinch of salt over the sliced radishes.

That was ready in a flash, right? You barely even need a recipe for this scrumptious Radish Sandwich with Butter and Salt, it's that simple!

    Variations

The genius of this French radish recipe lies in its simplicity, but that doesn't mean you can't experiment a bit! Here are a few easy ideas to try:

    • Butter - Blitz the butter with fresh herbs (such as tarragon or chives) for another layer of flavor. Compound butters can also be used.
    • Bread - Swap out the baguette for any type of crusty, artisan-style bread.
    • Salt - Try using flavored salts, such as smoked salt, salt seasoned with herbes de provence, or spicy salt.
    • Other Veggies - Layer the sandwich with other vegetables, such as thinly sliced cucumber or bell pepper.
    • Closed Sandwich - To create more of a traditional closed sandwich, prepare the recipe as directed (with butter and radishes on both sides), then add a layer of arugula (and perhaps some fresh herbs) to the middle before closing.
    • Appetizer - This recipe is easily turned into an appetizer, simply by serving it on thin baguette slices or crostini toasts. You could also create tea sandwiches by adding the toppings to thinly sliced bread (remove the crusts, and halve or quarter the bread first).

    Serving Suggestions

Serve this French Radish Sandwich as a snack or light meal ... it's wonderful either way! It makes a great apéro snack paired with other appetizers, like Fromage Fort (a mixed cheese spread) and Homemade Crackers, Tarte du Soleil (puff pastry sun tart with pesto filling), Dates Stuffed with Blue Cheese, or these delish Mini Cheese Tarts.

For an easy lunch or dinner, serve the sandwich with a light side, such as this Warm Goat Cheese Salad, Butter Lettuce Salad with Radishes, or this classic French Potato Salad. It would be perfect for a picnic, too!
