    Ginnie's Take

Halloween is just around the corner. Although I don't have any major plans this year, I can't resist making a few fun treats to mark the day, and these adorable Mummy Hot Dogs are just the ticket! This easy appetizer is essentially pigs in a blanket, but with a Halloween twist. You can throw these Mini Mummies together in minutes, just be prepared to watch them disappear fast. Perfect for all your spooky season festivities, whether they're low-key or completely over-the-top!

    Why You'll Love This Recipe

    • Super Easy - You need just a few minutes and a handful of ingredients to make these yummy mummies! Your kids will love helping you create these easy, crescent-wrapped hot dogs, too.
    • Kid (and Adult) Friendly - This tasty treat will be gobbled up by kids and adults alike, making them perfect for parties (or just lazy afternoon fun).
    • Simple to Customize - You can easily customize this recipe by using different types of hot dogs and sausages. And with a few small tweaks, the recipe works for any diet: vegetarian, vegan, and gluten free, included!

    Ingredients

This recipe calls for just a few simple ingredients! Here's what you'll need:

    • Hot Dogs - Choose your favorite hot dogs (weiners / weenies / whatever you call them!) for this recipe. I used LightLife Smart Dogs, which is a great plant based option for vegetarians and vegans
    • Crescent Rolls - You'll also need a can of crescent rolls. These Immaculate Baking Organic Crescent Rolls are a great vegan choice.
    • Eyes - I recommend using candy googly eyes, although you'll find other ideas below.
    • Dipping Sauce - Keep it simple and serve these Mummy Dogs with ketchup and mustard, or serve them with this scrumptious Vegan Honey Mustard like I did! You need just three ingredients (plant based mayo, Dijon mustard, and maple syrup) and a couple minutes to make it.
PRO TIP: You'll find similar recipes for this Halloween treat, but this one is vegetarian and vegan friendly! Plus, you can easily customize these recipe to fit different diets (like gluten free). Check out the Variations section below for tips.

    You'll Also Need

You'll need a sharp knife to prep the ingredients, a baking sheet to cook the mummies (these sturdy sheet pans are my fave), and a small bowl to make the sauce. Optional: line your baking sheet with nonstick foil or parchment paper for easy clean up.

    How to Make Mummy Dogs

These Halloween Hot Dogs are very easy to prepare! You'll find a detailed recipe card below, but here's a quick overview of the steps:

    1. Slice hot dogs in half. Start by cutting the hot dogs in half (crosswise) to make 16 mini mummies. Tip: You can also keep the hot dogs whole, if you prefer.
    2. Prep dough. Separate the crescent dough into rectangles, then press the perforation marks between the triangles together.
    3. Cut dough into strips. Use a sharp knife to cut the dough into strips (lengthwise).
    4. Wrap hot dogs. Working with one dough strip at a time, wrap each hot dog with two strips, overlapping the strips to create a bandaged look. Make sure to leave an opening at the rounded side for eyes.
    5. Bake. Transfer the wrapped hot dogs to a baking sheet, then bake until golden brown.
    6. Make dipping sauce. While the hot dogs bake, mix together the mayo, mustard, and maple syrup for the dipping sauce. Or just grab some ketchup and mustard!

Once the Mummy Hot Dogs are done baking, add the eyes (see my tips below). Then serve with your dipping sauce. Yum!

PRO TIP: This recipe can also be prepared in your air fryer. Preheat air fryer at 350°F (175°C) for 5 minutes, then add wrapped hot dogs in a single layer (you may need to do this in batches). Cook for five to seven minutes or until browned.

    Adding the Eyes

While the eyes are optional, they really do make these Mummy Dogs come to life (lol)! Here are a few options to try:

    • Googly Eyes - The cutest and easiest idea: candy googly eyes held in place with a little mustard (or ketchup). This is my favorite choice!
    • Mayo - Top the dogs with a couple dots of mayo, then center a poppy seed or black sesame seed in the middle of each dot.
    • Mustard - Add a couple mustard dots on the dogs for eyes.

If you're using mayo or mustard, it will be easiest to add the eyes with a squeeze bottle, but you can use the end of a chopstick or skewer, too.

    Variations

You can easily customize this recipe with just a few substitutions:

    • Hot Dogs - Replace the hot dogs for sausages, like breakfast sausage or Italian sausage. Tip: If you're using something raw or frozen, you may want to partially precook them first.
    • Dough - Swap out the crescent rolls for puff pastry or pizza dough.
    • Topping - Sprinkle the piggies with Everything Bagel Seasoning, sesame seeds, or poppy seeds before baking.
    • Cheesy - Add a piece of cheese under the hot dogs, before you wrap them. Tip: Try to cover as much of the cheese with the dough as possible when wrapping.
    • Dipping Sauce - Get creative here! Along with honey mustard (or regular mustard) and ketchup, pair the dogs with other sauces, like Ranch, Pesto Mayo, Marinara, Buffalo Sauce, or Romesco Sauce.
    • Vegan - Use vegan crescent rolls and plant based hot dogs.
    • Gluten Free - Wrap the hot dogs in gluten free pizza dough instead of crescent rolls.

Making Ahead of Time (and Storage)

If you'd like to prepare this recipe ahead of time, wrap the hot dogs a couple hours in advance, then refrigerate them in an airtight container. Bake as directed when you're ready to serve them.

These Hot Dog Mummies are best when eaten right away. If you do have leftovers though, store them in an airtight container in your refrigerator for up to four days. When you're ready to eat them, reheat them in your oven or air fryer for a few minutes.

    Servings Suggestions

Serve this spooky snack with other Halloween treats, like these Ghost Cake Pops, Dirt Cheesecake Parfaits, Roasted Pumpkin Seeds, Pumpkin Pizza, and Mini Pumpkin Tarts. And don't forget a seasonal drink, like this Hot Apple Cider, Pumpkin Steamer, or these Sparkling Cider Mocktails!
