1. Celebrate Spring
The best thing about March is the start of spring! March is one of only two times each year with an equinox, a day when each of the earth’s latitudes have nearly equal amounts of daylight and darkness. For those of us living north of the equator, the March equinox marks the start of spring (if you live south of the equator, it marks the start of fall).
Spring is a season of new beginnings, fresh starts, and (hopefully) warmer weather. All things worth celebrating! Make sure to spend time outside looking for signs of spring, cook a spring feast (make a few of these Spring Recipes), or choose another way to mark the occasion. If you’re looking for more creative spring ideas, check out my Spring Bucket List.

Four books I’ve read recently that would make great Women’s History Month reads are The Seed Keepers by Diane Wilson, The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennett, How to Kill a Witch by Zoe Venditozzi and Claire Mitchell, and skin & bones by Renée Watson! The Madison Public Library also has a great list of fiction, memoir, and history books that are perfect for reading this month!
- Attend a community event. Look for events celebrating women’s history in your local community calendars, through museums, and local businesses.
- Support a woman-owned business. Seeking out women owned businesses is a great way to find a new favorite restaurant, product, or store, while also supporting your community!
- Discover women’s history at a National Park. Our U.S. National Parks are a wonderful place to hear women’s stories and learn about women’s history!
- Make a donation or get involved. Consider supporting an nonprofit in your community that’s focused on helping girls and women, such as local health clinics, organizations supporting physical and mental health (like Girls on the Run), STEM programs (such as Girls Who Code), organizations that foster creativity (like the Boys & Girls Club), or advocacy groups (like the National Indigenous Women’s Resource Center).

11. Dress for a Rainy Day
Spring is known for its rainy weather. And while dreary weather isn’t the most enjoyable, you can make any drizzly day better by staying warm and dry with a cute accessories! Here are some fun ideas:
- Find a raincoat that makes a dreary day a little brighter. I don't know about you, but on grey days, wearing something bright (whether that's colorful raincoat or vibrant outfit) instantly brightens my mood. Prefer something more neutral? A classic trench coat will never go out of style!
- Keep your feet dry. If you'll be spending time out side on a rainy day, a cute pair of waterproof boots or booties are a must.
- Invest in a good umbrella. Cheap umbrellas are fine on a drizzly day. When it's rainy and windy though, they rarely hold up. That's when you need a higher quality windproof umbrella. And bonus: it comes in tons of colors. There's even a mood boosting rainbow option!

March is the perfect month to get started on your spring cleaning! Whether you have a small apartment or a large house, take your time and give it a detailed scrub, catching all those corners and spots that you normally miss. This annual event was started by the United Nations in 2012 as a way to recognize the importance of happiness in the lives of people around the world. 22. Find Your Own Pot of Gold
While the chances of finding an actual pot of gold are pretty slim (lol), you may be able to find an actual stash of cash in your home! My husband and I like to keep a coin jar on our kitchen counter, which we cash in about once a year. Other ways to make money this month are by hosting a yard sale, selling unused furniture on Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist, listing your treasures on eBay, or by consigning clothes at a resale shop. Poshmark is a great place to sell clothes online, which is also a great place to find affordable used clothes. Signup at Poshmark using my code GINNIEL to get $10 off your first purchase!
23. Enjoy the Spring Flowers
March’s warmer weather means flowers are starting to bloom, especially in warmer climates! Here in Texas, bluebonnets (the state flower) are a huge deal, but it’s also the start of cherry blossom season. My helpful guide will help you find all the best cherry blossoms spots in the U.S., and if you’ll be in New York, you’ll love this guide to cherry blossoms in NYC, too!

28. Buy a Pair of Sunglasses
One of my favorite things about March is that the days start to get longer, which means more sunshine! And in my opinion, a great pair of sunnies is the perfect accessory for every outfit. Here are a few inexpensive, but durable pairs that I own and love:
- If you like classics with a modern twist, these Retro Aviators are such a cool shape.
- These Oversized Round Sunglasses are classic, but cute!

- These Retro Cateye Sunglasses are a fun way to add a pop of color to your outfit.
29. Make a Seasonal Recipe
While most produce is available year round these days, fruits and veggies tend to be extra delicious when eaten in season! In March, look for cold weather vegetables, like cabbage, root vegetables, broccoli, and brussels sprouts. Fresh spring veggies are also starting to appear, such as asparagus, artichokes, lettuce and greens, and leeks. March is an ideal time to enjoy your favorite citrus fruits, too. Learn more about what produce is in season, then try one of my fave seasonal recipes:
- Farfalle with Roasted Asparagus

- Broccoli Pizza
- Broccoli Calzones
- Roasted Carrot Soup
- Kale and Farro Salad
- Radish Sandwiches
- Butter Lettuce Salad
30. Research Your Family History
March is a wonderful time to research your family heritage. If you need a little motivation, you might be interested to know that the first full week of March is Celebrate Your Name Week, March 14 is National Write Down Your Story Day, National Genealogy Day is the second Saturday in March! Here are a few resources that I’ve found helpful:
- Family Search - A super helpful site that's totally free. You can use it to create a family tree, search census and military records, and more.
- The National Archives - An excellent source for helpful tips and records.
- Local Resources - Make sure to seek out local resources, too. For example, I’ve found family photos through a local college archive, discovered info in specialized Facebook groups, and researched newspaper articles through the library.
- Helpful Books – Not sure where to get started? I recommend reading a book that lays out helpful genealogy techniques, such as the Beginners Guide to Genealogy, which was written by professional genealogist (he's also written other books when you’re ready to dive deeper). Essential Skills for the Occasional Genealogist (ideal if you're short on time), My Family Tree Workbook (great for kids and adults alike), and Genealogy Organizer (perfect for tracking everything you learn) are also wonderful resources.

32. Fly a Kite
Spring is typically the windiest time of year (due to changing atmospheric pressure and temperatures), which makes flying a kite one of the best things to do in March. But choosing the right conditions is important. Check out these kite flying tips, then get you started!

33. Jump Start Your Exercise Routine
There’s nothing like a little warm (or at least warm-er) weather to jump start an exercise routine! Personally, this is my favorite time of year to exercise outside. The weather is pleasant (when it’s not storming), and breathing in the fresh air just feels so refreshing. Make sure to set aside time in your schedule to take a long walk (or run), play a game of pickle ball, go for a bike ride, take a hike, or even shoot a few hoops this spring.
34. Brighten Your Skin
After a long winter, even the most moisturized skin can appear dull and lackluster, making March the perfect time to start brightening up your complexion before summer! Here are a few products that I've used that make a big difference:
- Moisturizer – Even if your skincare routine is super basic, a good moisturizer is a must! I have sensitive, combination skin, and I alternate between moisturizers depending on dry and flaky my skin is. My budget friendly favorite for warmer weather is Vanicream Daily Facial Moisturizer (it's cheap, but effective). In winter, I switch to CeraVe Skin Renewing Night Cream which is really rich, but doesn’t break me out. I also love Herbivore Aquarius Pore Purifying Clarity Cream for calming down irritated, acne-prone skin, and Elemis Superfood Midnight Facial is thick and creamy, yet perfect for combo skin in drier weather.
- Toner / Exfoliator - A toning or exfoliating product is ideal for sweeping away flakes and revealing brighter skin. Two that I love: Paula's Choice Skin Perfecting 2% BHA Liquid Salicylic Acid Exfoliant and Elemis Dynamic Resurfacing Facial Pads.
- Vitamin C – If you’re concerned about aging and want to step up your routine, a vitamin C serum can be super helpful. Vitamin C is an antioxidant with many benefits, including protecting your skin from environmental damage and improving the appearance of dark spots and wrinkles. There are many serums out there, but I’ve found TruSkin Vitamin C Face Serum to be an effective, affordable option (especially for first time users). I’ve purchased many a bottle, and it never irritates my skin and always leaves it looking bright and glowy.
- Retinol / Bakuchiol – Retinol is a form of vitamin A that boosts production of collagen and helps treat acne, fade dark spots, minimize fine lines and wrinkles, and improves your skins texture (among other benefits). You can purchase it over the counter, and stronger retinoids (tretinoin) are also available by prescription. If your skin is sensitive, you may want to try bakuchiol (a seed extract), which is a newer retinol alternative. It’s thought to have many of the same benefits, but it’s much gentler on the skin. My skin is super sensitive, and I've really struggled with retinol in the past, but I've found that adapalene (Differin is a popular brand that you can buy it over the counter) works well for my skin. I also really like Herbivore Moon Dew Eye Cream (it contains bakuchiol), which I find gentle enough to use nightly.
- Sunscreen – If you’re going to use Vitamin C and Retinol products, both of which make your skin more sensitive to the sun, you need to pair them with a daily sunscreen. My absolute favorite is Elta MD UV Clear. It's super light and works so well for oily / combo skin! I also really like La Roche-Posay Anthelios Light Fluid Facial Sunscreen, which is less expensive and also great for combo skin.
- Blush – A swipe of blush along your cheekbones is an easy way to instantly brighten your face. My current fave is Glow Recipe Tinted Blush Serum. It has a beautiful, glowy finish that's so pretty! I also love Tarte Amazonian Clay in Big Ego (it looks much more subtle when applied vs. in the package), and for more of bronzed look, Kiss of Pink from Bare Minerals (a blush / bronzer combo) can't be beat.
- Highlighter – Adding a subtle highlight is another way to make your skin look fresh. For my combination skin, I don’t like to go too wild, as things can start to look greasy fast. But I love Tula 'Spresso Energizing Eye Balm, which I sweep on over makeup below my eyes (it really softens the looks of wrinkles) and at the very tops of my cheekbones.
35. Clean Up Your Backyard
Sunnier, warmer days are just around the corner! This in-between season is a wonderful time to start getting your backyard in shape for summer. Remove any debris left over from fall and winter, clean your patio furniture, get your grill in tip top shape, add some colorful plants, and tend to other important tasks.
36. Create a Little Free Library
With everyone spending more time outside, spring is the perfect time to set up a Little Free Library. These “take a book, share a book” boxes are a great way to build community and meet your neighbors. If you’re handy (or know someone who is), you can make one yourself, or you can purchase a pre-made Little Free Library. Not ready to set up your own? Check out this Little Free Library map to find one near you.
37. Relax with a Cocktail
Celebrate National Cocktail Day on March 24 by whipping up a delicious drink! Try one of my go-to cocktails (or mocktails):
- This Pomegranate Mojito is a fun, vibrant twist on the classic drink!
- A classic Daiquiri cocktail is so simple to make and so refreshing. It's truly one of my favorites.
- You only need two ingredients for this fancy Kir Impérial (Chambord and champagne).
- This refreshing Chelada recipe is perfect for beer lovers!
- Don't drink? Treat yourself to an alternative sipper instead, like this Sparkling Apple Cider Mocktail or this Virgin Mojito!
38. Plan a Trip to Ireland
Have you ever considered spending St. Patrick's Day in Ireland? Perhaps this is the year to do it! March in Ireland means milder temperatures and feeling of rebirth after winter. You'll also encounter smaller crowds, giving you more time to enjoy the sights and magical atmosphere.
If a trip is not in your budget, you can still get a taste of Ireland by watching a movie set on the Emerald Isle, learning about the island's history, or by reading a book written by an Irish author.
39. Catch a Beautiful Sunset
With its warmer weather (hopefully) and later sunsets (thank you Daylight Savings Time), March is a wonderful time to take a moment to pause and enjoy a sunset! Grab a cozy drink, then soak in the beautiful colors and a moment of peace.
40. Celebrate a March Holiday
March is full of daily, weekly, and monthly observations and holidays, ranging from strange to serious! For example, did you know that it's National Nutrition Month? You can also celebrate Ramadan, Purim, and Holi in March, along with more niche holidays, such as National Artichoke Day, World Poetry Day, Mom and Pop Business Owners Day, Working Moms Day, and National Introverts Week (to name a few). You can find even more March holidays at Country Living!
